Anthony McCall moved from London to New York in January 1973 and began developing ideas for a film in which spectators would face the projector rather than the screen and focus on the beam of light itself. He tested the idea by covering his studio window with black paper and piercing it with a single narrow slit. When the sun fell on the window it projected a flat blade of light into the room, which ambient dust and smoke from a single cigarette made perfectly visible. Later that year, McCall made his first solid light film, Line Describing a Cone.

McCall describes his practice as existing in the space where cinema, sculpture and drawing overlap. He is best known for his large-scale, immersive sculptural light installations that incorporate the visitor and invite them to become active participants in the work.
