Published to accompany the major exhibition Alan Davie & David Hockney: Early Works at The Hepworth Wakefield (19 October 2019 to 19 January 2020), The Hepworth Wakefield are delighted to present a richly illustrated new publication, which provides an original perspective on the remarkable work of these two greats of post-war painting and explores their significant artistic careers.
After encountering the work of Alan Davie (1920 - 2014) during a major retrospective at the former Wakefield Art Gallery in 1958, a young David Hockney (b. 1937) was struck by Davie's landmark Abstract Expressionist paintings which stimulated his own experimentation with colourful abstraction.
Published by Lund Humphries, and edited by The Hepworth Wakefield's curator Eleanor Clayton and independent curator Helen Little, this book includes an essay by Clayton that explores shared themes and influences relating to poetry that becomes apparent in their work. The book also includes an entry by Little that examines the early art of Hockney and Davie alongside a series of contributions by art historian Sir Alan Bowness, Davie collector Ronnie Duncan and art critic Marina Vaizey.
