This fascinating collection of photographs is at once a reference work and a personal exploration of modernist architecture across the globe

Containing almost 200 images of the most visually striking buildings built between 1920 and 1989 in Europe, North and South America, the Middle East and Asia, Modern Forms reveals how modernist architecture was imagined as the embodiment of political and social ideologies. The buildings featured range from humble bus stops to government buildings, such as the Gateway Arch in Saint Louis, Missouri, and the Ukrainian Institute of Scientific Research and Development in Kiev, and little-known structures, such as the Balneological Hospital in Drushkininkal, Lithuania, and Oscar Niemeyer’s unfinished International Fairgrounds in Tripoli, Lebanon.

While the structures avant-garde designs provide a wonderful abstract journey through the forms of modernism, an index detailing the locations, date, architects and purpose of each allows readers to better understand the contexts and functions of the buildings.
