Eyes and lips are popular motifs in Surrealism. The image of an open eye would usually be interpreted as the way an individual accesses the world, but to the Surrealists this was a false vision or mirror as reality lay elsewhere, within oneself.  Lips can be seen in The Mae West Lips Sofa, 1937 by Salvador Dali and in Man Ray's Observatory Time: The Lovers, 1970. Observatory Time: The Lovers will be on display as part of the Lee Miller and Surrealism in Britain exhibition at The Hepworth Wakefield.
