John Wells, Island Counterpoint, 1956
Wells studied medicine in London from 1925-30 and for a year attended night classes at St. Martin’s School of Art. During a visit to Cornwall in 1928 he studied with Stanhope Forbes and was introduced to Ben and Winifred Nicholson and Christopher Wood. Despite qualifying as a doctor in 1930 and working as a GP until the end of the war, Wells decided to pursue a career as an artist. He bought a studio in Newlyn and became one of the founding members of the Penwith Society of Arts. Wells’ linear compositions owe much to the 3-dimensional constructions that Gabo worked on during the war whilst living in Cornwall.
