‘With Salon Paintings, Anderson confirms his reputation as one of our finest living painters, a sophisticated presence who delights in his medium, and has a mesmerising touch.’ Alistair Sooke, The Telegraph. Read the ★★★★★ review here.

Commissioned to coincide with the exhibition Hurvin Anderson: Salon Paintings on display at The Hepworth Wakefield from 26 May until 5 November 2023.

Hurvin Anderson (b. 1965) first painted a Birmingham-based barbershop in 2006. Over the last 15 years, Anderson has repeatedly reworked the same barbershop in a multitude of ways to explore key painting styles, shifting from figuration to abstraction, and experimenting with the classic genres of still life, landscape and portraiture.

Hurvin Anderson has kindly gifted this edition to The Hepworth Wakefield. All funds raised through the sale of the edition allow us to present ambitious and captivating exhibitions, care for our growing art collection and new garden, and deliver a programme of engaging learning activities that enhances lives.

Sales are limited to one purchase per customer. Purchases of multiples will be refunded. Not for resale.

Hurvin Anderson (b. 1965) creates vibrant paintings that draw on the genres of still life, landscape and portraiture to explore the way community and identity can be represented. Born in Birmingham to Jamaican parents, Anderson’s practice touches upon his Jamaican heritage as well as referencing wider art history to create a unique sense of place and identity. The artist references the creativity and visibility of Blackness within contemporary society, paying homage to his cultural and political forebears while also contributing to discussions about the legacy of painting.

Recent solo exhibitions include: They Have a Mind of Their Own, Rat Hole Gallery, Tokyo, Japan (2019);  Foreign Body, Michael Werner Gallery, New York, USA (2016);  Backdrop, Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, Canada (2016); Dub Versions, New Art Exchange, Nottingham, UK (2016) and Hurvin Anderson: Anywhere but Nowhere, The Arts Club of Chicago, Chicago IL (2021).
