Patrick Heron, June Horizon, 1957

Born in Headingley in Leeds, Heron later lived in St Ives, where he became part of the colony of Modernist artists that included Barbara Hepworth. June Horizon shows the shift in Heron’s style after he encountered the work of the American colour-field painter Mark Rothko. The dense mark-making evident in his earlier work has been replaced by a focus on formal values such as flatness of composition and colour balance. Heron explained that he was aiming for ‘an exclusive concentration on the experiences of colour’. Helen Kapp, Wakefield Art Gallery’s Director in the 1950s, championed Heron’s work and organised his first retrospective exhibition in 1952.
