"Teaching art in schools is staggeringly important. It teaches children to think differently and to do things with pleasure" Sir Michael Craig-Martin, 2020
In 2018 The Hepworth Wakefield launched School Prints an ambitious five-year project to inspire every primary school child in Wakefield District through contemporary art. Each year, the participating schools are gifted a set of limited edition prints by leading contemporary artists for display in school and are supported with an in-depth engagement programme led by artists and creative practitioners to encourage creativity across the curriculum. Artists Sir Michael Craig-Martin, Laure Prouvost and Linder Sterling have generously produced prints for the 2020 edition. All profit made through the sale of the prints supports the learning and engagement programme. School Prints 2020 is kindly supported by The Eridge Trust and Phillips.
Sir Michael Craig-Martin was born in Dublin in 1941. He grew up and was educated in the United States, studying Fine Art at the Yale School of Art and Architecture. He has lived and worked in Britain since 1966.
His best-known works include An oak tree, 1973, in which he claimed to have changed a glass of water into an oak tree; his large-scale black-and-white wall drawings; and his intensely coloured paintings, installations and commissions, including the European Investment Bank in Luxembourg, the Laban Dance Centre in London (in collaboration with Herzog and deMeuron), the DLR station at Woolwich Arsenal, and, most recently, the HDI Gerling Headquarters in Hannover.
As is traditional in editions publishing, the price of the edition will increase as it sells out.
