Mabel Frances Layng, The Tea Room, 1937

Born in Macclesfield in 1881, Layng studied art under Frank Brangwyn at the London School of Art between 1906-08.  By Layng’s early twenties she had started painting her urban observations, mostly of women at their daily doings such as at a tea room table, in shops, sewing alone, or sitting on the bus.
