Published to accompany Lewis Hammond's first UK museum exhibition, opening at The Hepworth Wakefield (23 May – 1 November 2026). Born in Wolverhampton and based in Berlin, Hammond paints layered, shadowed worlds of figures, animals and architecture, drawing on the Baroque, Surrealism and the Old Masters. Made on the eve of his return to the UK, this new body of work takes shape around home and belonging.
The catalogue reproduces the new paintings in colour, with essays by Julia Michiko Hori, Kayo Chingonyi and Helen Turner, an in-conversation between the artist and curator Marie-Charlotte Carrier, and a foreword by Laura Smith. Designed by Rachel Jones.
