Rug, 2017
Edition of 60
Material: Persian Yarn
Dimensions: 152 x 213cm (slight variations possible as handmade)

The Hepworth Wakefield is delighted to present the artist edition, Rug, 2016-17, by the painter Howard Hodgkin. The design for the rug was painted by Howard specifically for this edition in 2016. The rug is hand-knotted in Mirzapour India, from the finest imported Persian Yarn that is then hand-spun and hand-dyed.

The edition was created by the artist in partnership with Christopher Farr, a London based company that has been at the forefront of contemporary rug design since 1990 and who work with the world's leading artists and institutions.

Matthew Bourne from Christopher Farr, who managed the production of the rug comments; We are delighted and proud to have been involved in this project and were at pains to involve the artist as much as possible. I travelled to India in January to see the first samples and then arranged for them to be sent down to Howard in Mumbai along with hundreds of colours for the final colour selections to be made.

Howard Hodgkin (1932 - 2017) is widely regarded as one of the world's greatest painters and has occupied a central place in contemporary art for over half a century. In Summer 2017, The Hepworth Wakefield staged  Howard Hodgkin: Painting India, the first comprehensive exhibition to explore the enduring influence of India on Hodgkin's work, a place he returned to almost annually, since his first trip to the country in 1964, over 50 years ago.

The Hepworth Wakefield has worked with a host of world-renowned artists on a programme of hugely successful exhibitions. We continue to build an impressive portfolio of Artist Editions, produced through these collaborations. All profits from edition sales support the gallery's ambitious learning and exhibition programme.

Speaking in 2016, Howard Hodgkin said: ‘I fell in love with Indian art when I was at school, thanks to the enterprising art master, Wilfrid Blunt. I longed to visit India, but only managed to do so in my early thirties. It proved a revelation. It changed my way of thinking and, probably, the way I paint.
