On the occasion of the exhibition Kira Freije: Unspeak the Chorus, opening at The Hepworth Wakefield on 22 November 2025, we are delighted to release a new limited edition sculpture by the artist.
In Ardent Hearts, Freije isolates a fragment of an imagined, larger scenario. Cast from life, the hands are two bodies connected, holding onto one another: supporting and loving. The edition is representative of Freije’s gesture works; fragmented portraits encapsulated within a single gesture.
Ardent Hearts is sand cast in aluminium, each moulded individually, and patinated with the variable heat marks that arise in the casting process present in all of Freije’s figures. It includes a wall mounting fixture on the reverse.
Kira Freije (b. 1985) completed a BA in Fine Art at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art at the
University of Oxford in 2011. She received her Postgraduate Diploma from the Royal Academy Schools in 2016.
Freije works with metal, fabric, light and found materials to create sculptural figures that occupy the in-between—scenes glimpsed in passing, caught in a state of becoming or seeking guidance. Her practice draws on a range of processes including welding, casting, and glassblowing, and her sculptures bear the visible marks of their own making. Using welded steel cages to form torsos and limbs, and cast aluminium faces, hands, and feet—often taken directly from friends and family—Freije embeds a sense of intimacy into each work, cementing personal connection in permanent form.
