Lewis Hammond
study after Fidelitas in Arduis
Three-plate soft ground etching onto Hahnemühle 350g paper
Image size: 25 x 35 cm
Paper size: 32.5 x 42 cm
Edition of 30, plus 3 APs and 2 DRs signed and numbered
To accompany his first major solo exhibition in the UK, Crystal in the Shade, Lewis Hammond has created a special soft ground etching in an edition of 30. Hammond’s edition, study after Fidelitas in Arduis, continues the themes of home and belonging from the exhibition.
In his paintings, Hammond reconsiders the history of painting and its relationship with religious iconography and allegory. While rabbits are traditionally associated with fertility, in Hammond’s work they are laden with more ambiguous meanings. For Hammond, the rabbit provides a means of exploring aspects of the human condition without depicting the human figure.
The recurring motif of tight architectural alcoves frame Hammond's subjects, serving as both a container and an amplifier of the emotions they provoke.

Lewis Hammond (b. 1987, Wolverhampton, UK) lives and works between London and Berlin. Hammond’s practice reflects a fascination with the materiality of oil paint and the evocative power of dark, earthy tones. His charged, fantastical paintings interweave mythological elements with contemporary themes and explore the interplay between personal relationships and global socio-political events. Drawing inspiration from Old Masters like Caravaggio, Velåzquez, and Goya, he creates haunting, statuesque figures that traverse boundaries between the individual and the archetypal.
