Nicolas Party has created Trees, 2024 for The Hepworth Wakefield to accompany the major exhibition Forbidden Territories: 100 Years of Surreal Landscapes (23 November 2024 – 21 April 2025).

The exhibition marks 100 years of Surrealism – one of the most influential artistic, intellectual and literary movements of the 20th Century that continues to inspire artists working today. Party is one of the contemporary artists working within the legacy of Surrealism whose work is part of the exhibition.

This edition is the latest in a series of intricate woodcut prints by the artist. The subject matter of the print closely relates to Party's exhibited work; an immersive mural of a fairytale forest, which performs the backdrop to Max Ernst's ominous 1927 painting Cage, Forest and Black Sun.

The edition is produced in a limited edition of 50 signed and numbered works of which The Hepworth Wakefield received 30 prints.

Nicolas Party (b. Lausanne, 1980) is an artist who has achieved critical admiration for his familiar yet unsettling landscapes, portraits and still lives that simultaneously celebrate and challenge conventions of representational painting.

His works are primarily created in soft pastel, a medium that allows for exceptional degrees of intensity and fluidity in his depictions of objects both natural and manmade. Transforming them into fantastical characters and motifs where perspective is heightened and skewed to uncanny effect.

Based in New York and Brussels, Party studied at the Lausanne School of Art in Switzerland before receiving his MFA from Glasgow School of Art in Scotland.
