Explore some of the remarkable and diverse highlights of our nationally important collection of modern British art, including key works by Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore.
Featuring 44 of Odundo’s vessels – which recently were used as inspiration for Jonathan Anderson's Dior Couture debut – a large selection of museological and contemporary objects that reveal the range of global references that have informed her practice, alongside various texts including a conversation with Ben Okri. Comprising a series of interleaved sections in an organic flow which pairs and juxtaposes the historic and the contemporary, featuring works by Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, Lucie Rie, Jean Arp, as well as ancient vessels from Greece and Egypt, historic ceramics from Africa, Asia and Central America, and ritual objects from across the African continent.
The Journey of Things was originally published alongside the exhibition of the same name, led by Andrew Bonacina at The Hepworth Wakefield in Spring 2019.

The Hepworth Wakefield was built in 2011 by David Chipperfield Architects to house the city’s nationally important collection of modern and contemporary British art. The Wakefield Permanent Art Collection consists of more than 5,000 works, at the core of which is a significant group of works by Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore which celebrate Yorkshire’s heritage as the birthplace of modern British sculpture. Other leading British artists represented in the collection include Eileen Agar, David Bomberg, Roger Fry, Harold Gilman, Ben Nicholson, Patrick Heron, Lucie Rie and William Scott.
