Francis Butterfield, Yorkshire Landscape, 1937
(David) Francis Butterfield, (1905-1968), abstract painter, was born in Bradford and studied part-time at Bradford Art School, whilst working as a wool stapler in a local mill. The abstract art of Ben Nicolson had a major influence on Francis’s work and he began to experiment with his own style, which became over time distinctive by its alliance of organic and geometric forms.
