Hazel King-Farlow was an American art collector and painter, and sister to the heiress and art collector Peggy Guggenheim (1898– 1979). The sisters moved to Britain in the 1930s and Hazel King-Farlow became closely associated with Wakefield when she gifted over 20 works into the collection by noted European and British artists (including two of her own paintings), as well as contributing towards the purchase of Henry Moore’s Reclining Figure. In 1937, Hazel King-Farlow wrote to Ernest Musgrave, then Director of Wakefield Art Gallery, discussing her trip to Wakefield in 1939 and praising his curatorial sensibilities; in 1956 to honour her support, Wakefield held an exhibition of King-Farlow’s own paintings including this painting, Swiss Lake.

A number of works came into Wakefield’s collection through links to Peggy Guggenheim (1898–1979). In 1938 the Dutch artist Geer van Velde was given a solo exhibition at her Guggenheim Jeune gallery in London. The exhibition was encouraged by the artist’s friend, Irish writer Samuel Beckett, who was also Guggenheim’s lover at the time. Guggenheim gifted two Van Velde paintings to Wakefield’s collection. They are the only works known to be donated by Guggenheim into a UK public collection. In 1939, as war was imminent, the sisters hurriedly left the UK for America. The numerous gifts King-Farlow made into various British public collections may have been due to her inability to take the collection with her.
