The Hepworth Wakefield presents the first limited edition by American artist Christina Quarles.

Quarles vibrantly coloured artworks depict bodies in varying states of abstraction, framed by architectural devices that create ever-shifting spaces. The ways in which her painted bodies elude definition reflects her own experience of being misread or mis-represented as a queer cis woman, born to a black father and white mother. The artist's work is informed by her daily experience with ambiguity and seeks to dismantle assumptions of our fixed subjectivity through images that challenge the viewer to contend with the disorganized body in a state of excess.

This edition is presented alongside the exhibition Christina Quarles, 19 October 2019 - 19 January 2020 at The Hepworth Wakefield. This will be the first solo exhibition in a European museum by Quarles. On display will be a range of her recent paintings and drawings including a number of new works created specifically for this exhibition.

Quarles was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1985 and was raised in Los Angeles, California where she still lives. She completed her BA at Hampshire College in 2007 with a double concentration in Philosophy and Studio Arts. Christina earned her MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Yale University in 2016. She was the inaugural recipient of the 2019 P̩rez Art Museum Miami Prize and in 2017 she received the Rema Hort Mann Foundation Emerging Artist Grant.
