Louisa Fennell, Shambles, Meat Market, 1898
Louisa Fennell was an English painter, born in the Wakefield area of the West Riding of Yorkshire in 1847. She is best known for her watercolours of local scenes which serve not only as a valuable record of buildings now demolished, such as the Six-Chimneys, but are also an important socio-historical document of the way people lived at the turn of the century. These topographical views are a natural continuation of her childhood fascination with the everyday and the lives of the people around her.
