Beautifully brutalist: The Hepworth Wakefield announces a new collaboration with Yorkshire-based Plaey.

To celebrate The Hepworth Wakefield’s 12th birthday, the gallery has revisited its retail collaboration with Plaey – designer Matt Kelly – to launch two new additions in the popular Hepworth Block Vase range.

Inspired by The Hepworth Wakefield’s art, architecture and garden, Plaey's Hepworth Block Vases perfectly balance Brutalism and nature. The design of the first vase in the range took cues from Barbara Hepworth’s sculpture, echoing the shapes and forms in many of her works, and David Chipperfield’s building which rises from the River Calder.

The three vases in the range reflect Plaey’s ‘simple, playful, modular’ ethos and can be stacked on top of each other in totemic configurations reminiscent of Hepworth’s The Family of Man sculptures, which are on permanent display on the riverbank outside the gallery. The new vases also take more of a direct influence from The Hepworth Wakefield Garden designed by Tom Stuart-Smith.

The blocks are designed for single stem or small bunches of flowers or plants, dried or fresh. The pigmented jesmonite is lightly sealed - any water will darken and then dry out over time, developing a beautiful patina.

Due to their handmade nature, there will be slight variation in colour, size, shape and finish.

Materials: Hand cast pigmented jesmonite. Due to the hand casting process, one side of the vase is smooth while the other shows the rougher texture of the jesmonite material.

Dimensions 6 x 14.5 x 3.5 cm

Barbara Hepworth (1903–1975) is one of the most important artists of the 20th century. She was at the forefront of multiple avant-garde art movements, with wide-ranging interests that infused her work. Deeply spiritual and passionately engaged with political and technological change, Hepworth focused on the dynamic physical encounter with sculpture and how this could allow the viewer to both reflect on and alter their perceptions and experiences of the world.
