These plates are the first in a series of initiatives from Howard Hodgkin Home, made to celebrate the work of the British artist (1932-2017). Howard Hodgkin was invited to design a plate for Luciana Martinez de la Rosa’s Artplate series in 1986. His priority was practical, rather than purely aesthetic. The plates are designed to be used: what mattered was how good food would look on them. We have followed his example and taken two details from his print Souvenir, 1981, which used 5 different shades of black.
The plates have been made to the standards of hotel ware, to withstand multiple use over many years and are dishwasher-proof.
Souvenir, 1981. Screen print. 114.3 x 139.7cm.
