A solo exhibition by South African artist Igshaan Adams is on display at The Hepworth Wakefield until 3 November 2024. Entitled Weerhoud, meaning ‘Withheld’ in Afrikaans, the exhibition examines the impact of lived experiences and traumas on the human psyche, with a particular emphasis on the healing potential of movement.
These limited edition prints, signed by the artist, are inspired by Adams’ collaboration with the Garage Dance Ensemble based in Okiep, South Africa.
During the collaborative workshops, Adams placed raw canvases on the floor and applied various acrylic paint colours and silica sand to a sheet of plastic placed underneath the canvas. He then asked the dancers to perform on top of the canvases. The dancers’ movements left marks and impressions on the undersides of the canvases. Adams refers to these painted canvases as 'monotypes' and used them as templates for a new series of tapestries, some of which are now being presented at The Hepworth Wakefield.
