On the occasion of the exhibition Caroline Walker: Mothering at The Hepworth Wakefield, we are delighted to release a new limited edition lithographic print by Caroline Walker.
Walker’s art works reveal the complex experiences of women living and working in contemporary society. In recent years, her work has focused on motherhood and early-years care, combining objective documentary with personal experience.
This print features a scene from ‘Little Bugs', the outdoor nursery attended by Walker’s daughter. It was captured as part of her ongoing Nurture series, with two large scale paintings featured in the exhibition and, like much of Walker’s work, celebrates a fleeting moment from daily life.
Walker was particularly drawn to this image for the edition, because of the dappled sunlight shining through leaves, the textured ground and rich dark colour of the bark on the tree. These elements lend themselves to the process of layering and overlapping which is intrinsic to the kind of lithography Walker creates. For Walker’s Hepworth Wakefield edition, the image is printed in 9 layers, though the illusion of overlapping colour implies many more.
As is traditional in edition publishing, the price of the work will increase as the edition sells out.

Caroline Walker (b.1982, Dunfermline) studied painting at Glasgow School of Art and the Royal College of Art, London, and is known for her accomplished paintings which offer a lens into the everyday lives of women.
Through her large canvases, intimate panels and ink sketches, she portrays diverse female subjects in settings that blur the boundaries between public and private. Her works reveal the complex social, cultural and economic experiences of women living in contemporary society.
Walker explains: “The subject of my paintings in its broadest sense is women’s experience, whether that is the imagined interior life of a glimpsed shop worker, a closely observed portrayal of my mother working in the family home, or women I’ve had the privilege of spending time with, in their place of work. From the anonymous to the highly personal, what links all these subjects is an investigation of an experience which is specifically female.”
Walker’s work has been exhibited internationally and is currently featured in the Hayward Gallery UK touring exhibition ‘Acts of Creation: On Art and Motherhood’. Her work can be found in numerous international collections including Aïshti Foundation, Lebanon; Arts Council Collection, UK; De Ying Foundation, South Korea; Government Art Collection, UK; Hunterian, Glasgow, UK; Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, USA; Kistefos Museum, Norway; The Hague, The Netherlands; National Galleries of Scotland, UK; Tate, UK and Yale University, Connecticut, USA.
